How to Clean Your Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are a pretty substantial investment, so it is important that people who wear them learn the best way to clean as well as maintain them at home. Unlike a number of electronics, hearing aid devices need to operate in conditions that are quite far from ideal: inside the ear canals where they are constantly subjected to moisture and earwax. That’s why regularly cleaning one’s hearing aids is important.

Fortunately, this is something that one can easily do at home. To this end, we listed some tips that will help.

Buy the Right Tools

A brush and wax pick are indispensable tools for at-home hearing aid cleaning. Keep in mind that earwax can accumulate both at the end and the opening of the hearing aid device, causing sounds to become muffled. If the earwax is left for too long, it can damage the device’s receiver. That’s why it is important to use a pick and brush to clear the wax away.

Practice Good Habits

People who wear hearing aids should always make sure to wash their hands before they handle the device. Also, make sure to keep the hearing aids away from water since water and soap can damage these delicate devices.

Clean the Device at the End of the Day

Cleaning hearing aid devices at the end of the day will give them a few hours to air out. Make sure to avoid using alcohol or harsh chemicals when cleaning hearing aids since they could damage the device.

Keep Hearing Aid Devices Away From Extreme Cold or Heat

If the temperature happens to be below freezing and one takes their hearing aids out of their ears to, say, shovel the driveway, they should make sure to leave them inside the house rather than stashing them in the coat pocket. Likewise, hearing aid wearers should take the device out and place it inside the house (rather than the poolside table) before they jump in the pool on the hottest day of the summer. Regardless of what one does, it’s important to make sure that the hearing aid does not come in contact with extreme temperatures.
